89 200 tqa - wiring (was fire)
I patched in about 6 inches of 10 AWG to replace the burnt out wires
that went to the battery, and got the car going again. As soon as the
fan went on, the old red wires got VERY hot. The new wires at the end
stayed cool.
On inspection, the old wire had a lot of corrosion traveling up them,
and so I decided to bite the bullet and cut into them neat the ECU, to
heck their condition. They were corroded even there. This was most
likely the cause of the fire - the corrosion caused the wires to act as
a resistor and get very hot when a heavy current was passed through them
- viz. a/c + fan on a hot day.
So, rather than patch in 6 feet of wire, which is what I thought I'd do
if the wire was good near the ECU, I think I'm going to need to go all
the way to the fuse box :-(.
I have read somewhere that the 2 smaller wires go the fuse box - can
someone verify this too?
What's the best way to get these wires over to the fuse box? Do I need
to take the dashboard apart?
I am also going to replace the wire from the battery to the starter with
1 piece of 1 AWG wire. Should I crimp on the eyelet to go to the
starter, or solder it? Is there special high temp solder available for
high current applications?
Thanks a lot for the help. I desperately need to get this car going
ASAP. My wife is giving me total grief for not buying a Honda - we have
6 cars, and at present, only 2 are running, and neither has a/c.
