Re: 84 4kq (no cupholders, one good door latch)
Folks,
Do not go to the junkyard for 4K doorhandles and don't
put this job off. Rear outside doorhandles are only about $25 apiece
from Carlsen Audi, as much as the yards will charge you. I think
the front one cost me $45 or so.
Full procedure:
1. Remove handle trim by prying up end with thin screwdriver.
2. Remove phillips screw now exposed
3. Open door, pry off rubber grommet hiding second screw on doorjamb
(move weatherstrip away as necessary).
4. Remove second phillips screw holding handle through opening in
doorjamb. Do not drop the screw inside the doorjam. I do this by holding
a small pencil magnet on the screw while I unscrew it, then take the
screw driver away and remove the screw with the magnet.
5. Remove the old handle.
6. Fit the new handle along with the rubber gaskets.
7. Replace the outside screw, just snug.
8. Replace the doorjamb screw carefully by setting it on the end of a
screwdriver and slowly inserting it in the hole, it can be done.
9. Tighten both screws and refit the trim on the outside of the handle.
The front handle is harder because it has the lock rod, which has to
be reattached from inside the door cavity, necessitating removal of the
door panel. It's a pain, but it only took me about half an hour.
The inside handles require door panel reemoval (duh) and reattaching the errant
actuator rods. Usually the felt pads that tension these rods get flat
and the rods wiggle outof their sockets. I haven't found a good replacement
for the felt.
