I've been using a furnace filter to provide material for the fresh air
filter.  They have nice wire reinforcement so hold their shape well.
I cut a piece oversized by 1-2 cm on each side and then bend it over
the inlet, and tape it on with packing tape.  Not terribly elegant,
but not too crude, and it works very well (at US$5 for a very nice
filter element that is about 50x80 cm, you can use one for a long
time).
