OT: Need help buying a pickup

I've been getting by with using the 4kq as a "truck": with the Thule rack 
I've been able to cart around lots of lumber, ladders and the like. But I 
really need to get a junk pickup; something that can move a bed of top 
soil, mulch, lumber, what have you. I know nothing (really) about pickups.

Anyone with some knowledge of what trucks to look for or stay away from? 
Cheaper is much better. This will not be a daily (or weekly) driver.
