RE: quattro-digest V1 #250
Why more rear-enders?
Greenville is a college town. College is 20,000 people, Town is 50,000
people not counting college. So our population increases 40% every August.
Each one of these students has to learn how to drive in our town, where
things are, what the speed limits are and where, and now which red-lights
you can get fined for running. (Many of these people are from out of state,
because out-of state tuition is cheaper in North Carolina than in-state
tuition in many Northeastern states. So we get a bunch of kids who learned
to drive from the rude Northerners, they tailgate a lot.)
Knowing the people of our county as I do, as soon as the light turns yellow
at a camera intersection, then will not judge and see if they can make it
across the intersection, rather, they will slam on the brakes and make sure
they do not get a ticket. The many drivers from other areas in our town
will not be used to this and they WILL cause more rear end collisions at
lights from not paying attention at intersections and not anticipating
everone smacking on their brakes. Now it will the the person following's
fault. But is that going to make me feel better when I have to fix my car?
BTW, the past two major running a light collisions here in town involved
the police. One was the off-duty policewoman who rammed a family, killing
several, while speeding and running a red light goig home from work.
The second was a Crime Scene Tahoe going to a bank robbery. He ran a light
(had blue lights on [Those new blue lights that merely flash a strobe, and
are hard to see, rather than shining a rotating blue beam] but no siren,
and woman could not see him until it was too late, he got the ticket, and
rolled the Tahoe (being hit by a Pontiac Lemans) No major injuries here.
I wonder how many of those camera shots at the red lights will be of police
vehicles that are simply disregarded.
