4000 Turbo Quattro on the Road!
Finally got my MC-engine 4000 Quattro on the road and had to share my
excitement with any listers who might be interested. This car has been in
the shop for all but a month of this year for the requisite brake,
suspension, motor, etc upgrades and it was worth the wait. (Honestly, I've
been waiting 20 years for a car like this, and had to agree to giving up
motorcycling for the forseeable future to get approval for this project!)
The end result is exactly what I had hoped for - light, responsive, quick,
and TORQUEY! Turbo lag is virtually non-existent and I have yet to reach
the limits of cornering adhesion. Comments from non-Audiphiles who have
ridden in the car range from: "Does this have a small-block Ford in it?" to
"It feels like a high-powered go-kart!" to "Bring a helmet for me next
time!" to "I really don't think you should drive this to work daily" (the
wife).
Recent threads on the list have discussed the effect of altitude on turbo
lag. Living in Colorado, I rarely have the opportunity to drive at less than
5000ft. My chipped 5000TQ with the stock K26 sometimes feels like it takes
forever to spool up, and, though it's a great highway car, I must admit,
it's a real dog off the line. The 4000, with its lighter weight, lower
gearing, cam, bypass valve and K24 turbo, boosts immediately and pulls out
of corners strong. As the motor was just rebuilt, I haven't had the
opportunity to really test top-end performance, but the powerband is wide --
from 2500 to 6000 rpm, and with all the torque available, downshifting in
situations I normally would in the 5000 is simply not necessary.
All credit goes to David Jones of RevSport Motors in Colorado Springs who
built the car (including rebuiliding the engine, from a 1990 200Q), donated
countless parts from his UrQ (downpipe, intake, etc), and spent endless
evenings and weekends on the project. The end result is a truely clean,
tight, almost factory-like conversion, with only a few visual clues to the
aftermarket nature of the beast -- the 944T intercooler mounted in the front
bumper, the oversize boost gauge on the A-pillar, etc. I asked for a car
suitable for autocross and short track use and that's exactly what Dave
built.
There are still are few loose ends to tie up - ECU fine-tuning, brake feel
(hmm, maybe the G60's on the front aren't quite up to the task), heat
shielding (that 1200-1300F exhaust temp is sure noticeable in the summer),
but all in all, the car is ready for the track!
Anyone interested in details, let me know. For anyone planning a similar
conversion who needs design info on the intake, intercooler, battery box
(moved about six inches back from its original location, behind the
firewall), high-capacity oil cooler, G60 brackets, or whatever else was
custom fabricated, I have to defer to Dave on that.
