Folks,
Many thanks to all who suggested options and/or commiserated.
I had convinced myself it was the alternator again (3 in 6 months!).  
Recap: Total electrical failure while driving with the exception of the
radio and powerlocks.
I got the car flatbedded home and went out last night and the crazy thing
started right up and ran with no problems.  I managed to get the windows up
and the car secure so was pleased with that BUT now I've lost faith in the
car.  I'm going to head out today without opening the windows and see how
far I get.  (note to self - maybe you should have fixed the A/C)
I think Jouko might have been on track with bad connections in the ignition
switch.
If you see a gold ur-Q on the side of the road today please stop and make me
an offer I can't refuse.
