That's where you should put them when assembling the motor but once it's
running, they will rotate around and settle in wherever they're happiest.
The two-stroke motors that I built/raced when younger had a pin in the piston
to prevent the rings from rotating because they could snag in a port. (I
also remember pouring a little "Bon-Ami" cleanser down the sparkplug hole to
help seat the chrome rings when they were stubborn about this ... those were
the days!).
