87' 5kcstqw Suspension Upgrades

I was thinking about changing the suspension on my 87' 5kcstqw.  I am
looking for any recommendations and maybe some personal experiences from
this type of change,   I would like my audi to handle as well as my 96'
Passat GLS does with stock suspension.   Also the car has 138,000 my CV
joint just went the outer one left side mechanic says easier and cheaper to
replace front axle is this true.  Thanks in advance.
