There is a 5th gear switch on the transmission that is supposed
to signal the upshift indicator light system to turn off. If your
5th gear switch is bad, or if the connector came loose, or if there
is a wiring problem then the problem as you describe can occur.
Have you had any work done under the car? The 5th gear switch is
often mistaken for the backup light switch and the wiring to the
two switched around. Does your backup light come on when you
go into 5th gear?
