87 5kcst clutch replacement

The clutch finally went in my 87 5kcst.  I was 200 miles short of 240k
miles.   Not bad for an original clutch.  Limped it home, 40 miles, without
the clutch.  Now I'm getting ready to do a complete clutch replacement and
am looking for any tips that will make the job easier.  I know its not a
Quattro but there must be similarities.  I'm also thinking that with the
tranny out it would be a good time to replace the steering rack.  Am I right
that it would be easier with the tranny removed?  Thanks in advance.
