Need advice on good "low cost/high performance" tire comprimise

Ok, so I know I can't have the best of both worlds. I'd like to spend as
little as possible on a set of tires for an 87 4kcsq that will perform
comparably to your basic P6/P600. Just a street tire, not for competition. 3
season is fine, I have snows.

Any favorites out there?
