The number of tailpipes is not a good indicator of what engine it has.

If your 89 90 non-Q is a US model and has an automatic transmission,
then it's a 4 cylinder.  If it's a 5-speed manual then it's a 5-cylinder.
For the US model years 1988 and 89, the Audi 80 and 90 series has this
engine matrix:

	FWD	FWD	quattro
	5spM	Auto	5spM
80	2.0I4	2.0I4	2.3I5
90	2.3I5	2.0I4	2.3I5

The 2.0I4 engine makes 108hp, whereas the 2.3I5 engine is 130hp.

You can always have him pop the hood and count the number of spark plugs...
Another easily recognizable trait is that the 4 cylinder cars have the
radiator in front of the engine whereas the 5 cylinders have it offset to
the side.
