Battery charge indicator problem

Hi,

My battery charge warning lamp is consistently coming on, and staying on, on the multi-function dash
display on my 1990 Coupe 2.3E. As far as I can tell, the battery voltage is correct (12V with
the engine off, steady 14 volts with the alternator/engine running).
The battery-symbol warning comes on, accompanied by the customary "bleep", a few
seconds after I switch on the ignition, regardless of whether I have started the engine or
not. This leads me to think that it may simply be a fault with the multi-function display
 itself...
Does anyone know of any further checks I can do to find where the problem might lie? Is
this warning doing something more subtle than a voltage measurement, or is it just plain
 wrong?!
