Not true.  The Passat has the same front suspension as the A4.  Same 
engine/transmission as well.  I live in the mountains, and have just 
decided on a used A4q (about the same as I'd spend on a Passat) vs a new 
Passat.  The new Passat has fantastic build quality. Go look at one.  
You're kidding yourself if you think the A4 is "built" $4-5000 better.  
Quattro was what swung my decision, but the Passat is a bargain.
