Low idle. FAQ?

Sorry if this is a FAQ. I have low idle problem and not sure where to look.

Car is '89 100, 2.3L.  I've put new plugs, plug wires (Beru!), air filter in 
last week.  Previous owner said fuel filter was new. (Now year old.)

Car idles around 800 rpm (one notch below 1000) when first started, but when 
it warms up, idle drops to around 400 (just above first notch on tach).

Has approx 80K on it, so injectors may be in need of cleaning, but don't 
think this is the culprit as it will idle near correct speed when cold.

I also replaced the oil and H20 temp gauge senders a year ago.  But correct 
me if I'm wrong, those senders don't send a signal to the ECU?

Although, I remember being told at our local Audi dealer that the part # on 
the H20 temp sender was different because it was 'superceeded'.  Now I'm a 
little dubious.

Last thing is unfortunately I can't say if this is 'new' behaviour with 
regards to the idle, because it's a 100W (wife's), she isn't mechanically 
inclined and as such doesn't notice these kinds of things.
