The Owner's Manual for my '95 S6 has an entire section on trailer towing.
It starts on page 108 and ends on page 111. Specific mention is made of
using either a Class I or Class II hitch. Technical specs are listed on
page 178. Trailer with brakes - 2,000 pounds (900 kG), Traler without
brakes - 1,455 pounds (660 kG), tongue load - 110 pounds (55 kG).
Granted, a one ton trailer isn't all that big but it's still quite
significant.
