looking for an OS based mp3 player for the auto?  has anyone mensioned the
Empeg audio player?  find info on it at http://www.empeg.com  it uses Linux
and has a switchable red/blue LCD operations panel complete with the Linux
penguin on it.  i think they use a modified notebook HD for storage.  they
even have multiple HD combos for something near 12 gig.  that is a lot of
mp3s, even at 128 bit/44khz operations.  it is pricey, mainly due to it's
limited production.  but check out the website for details (like connecting
the unit to your USB/ADB port to upload mp3s).  they have pics of the unit
apart too.

mp3s IMO sound just as good as CD tracks.  the only drawback is the highs
are a little tinny, but nothing compared to Dolby on tape decks.
