.. I did exactly the same thing when a dealer sold me the wrong part for my
'88 5kCSQA on a Friday and I was doing the M/C job on a weekend ... frankly
I don't think there is anything unsound about it at all ... I'm sure that's
what they did at the factory when they went from the firewall mounted M/C to
the one on the "subframe" ...

That's a really good tip. I'm going to take a look at the wrecker tomorrow and see if the master cylinder on Jettas and Golfs of the same vintage as my car looks at all similar to the one on my car. Jettas and Golfs are very common around here but I haven't seen any Quantums.
It would be interesting to see whether or not the price for a replacement master cylinder for a Quantum is different than one for an Audi. Anyone know what years the Quantum was produced so I can quote a model year when I call the dealer?
