This is exactly what I did on the turbo GT when I had the exhaust
fabricated.

But, that still doesn't address the fact that if you want to be able to
swap between a cat and a test pipe for "on-road" and "off-road" usage. 
All of the flex pipes I've seen need to be welded in.
