On most cars you have to drop the auto tranny oil pan to drain the oil.
This allows you to change the filter at the same time. On the Audi 4-speed
auto, I think removing the dipstick housing from the pan would drain most of
the oil, but I don't have an auto (thank goodness), so I've never done it.
I've never seen a car with a drain plug, although it would be a good
idea given the increased oil change frequency being recommended. Toyota
recommends changing the auto trans oil every 20,000 km on the Camry. I
haven't been under my wife's new ride to see if the tranny has a drain
plug - I hope it does! Dropping a pan is a PITA - not difficult, just a
PITA, and you don't need a new filter every 20,000 km!
