OK, I confess. I now have 5 cars. Newest one is a "new" TDI golf in
flash red. If the paint color doesn't nuke your retinas, the projector
headlights will. It does drive very nicely. Good torque. Not like a well
fed MC mind you, but enough to make you forget it's a diesel. Real world
mixed driving comes in at 45 mpg. It costs $15 in diesel fuel in
Northern CA to go 500 miles. Throttle appears to be "fly by wire"
actuated by a vacuum unit similar to a cruise unit on a gas engine. Not
so coincedentally, it came with cruise despite being a base model. I
would definately consider the V6 TDI in a quattro if it were available
here.

P.S. I found the 16x6.5 new GTI wheels (1J0 601 025 F) for it on the
family album and was able to order a set for $420 despite the dealer
saying they were unavailable. The center caps set me back another $15
each. I had considered A3 wheels (8L0 601 025 C), but they were over
$400 each!
