I think it was a year (or more?) ago that someone who just bought a new VW
Passat also asked the same question (usenet?). The VW Passat had the same
oil-change schedule as A4. Anyway, he sent the sample of the original
engine oil for chemical analysis. I recall he said the lab DID detect
something else other than what was expected in the sample. His conclusion
-- keep the original engine oil as the schedule says, even if you're not
going to keep with the recommended schedule in subsquent oil-change
intervals.
