Re: Did Audi make a Turbo Diesel?
No, your eyes do not deceive you. About an hour after acquiring my Coupe, I was
at the coffee bar with the hood up, showing off the "alien power unit" 5
cylinder to a couple of V8 types, when a guy walks up, looks, and says, "I've
got the same motor, almost, in my Volvo turbodiesel..."
This piqued my curiosity. His car: '85 740 GLE wagon. Underhood: Big straight
six turbodiesel, VW/Audi rings on valvecover. Nearly identical shape of cylinder
head in comparison to the 2226. *Same PN on vacuum pump mounted alongside!*
Hmmmm, wonder if they're related? I'd never seen one of these before... the
extra cylinder seemed to be the only difference in the basic architecture of the
engine.
Side note: He was running Evans coolant. Said it worked great on the TD... So
well, in fact, that three years before, he had removed the fan (yes!) No
problems yet, in the Arizona desert, even. I know diesels run cooler, but I
didn't think *that* much cooler.
Regards,
Rob
