Engine coolant temp sensor location on 93 12V 2.8L

Having just successfully replaced my oxygen sensors, I was dismayed to find
the engine warning light still coming on after engine is warm and stop to
idle for more than 15 seconds.  Code is 2312  (Engine coolant temperature
sensor).  Previous code was 2331, which does not appear with new O2 sensors
(more on that later and thanks to those who helped locate replacement
sensor and means of extraction).
Question is, where is the engine coolant temperature sensor
on my 93 100 CS quattro wagon?
