Re: Where to get 5000TQ cv joints at good price ????
True, rebuilt axles have their place. The quality of these axles, however,
is in no way that of the original. Rebuilders commonly machine the grooves
in which the balls ride in order to remove damaged metal, they install
oversize balls to restore tolerance. this machining process leaves a rather
rough surface finish and removes hardened material. This results in
premature failure. My 85 4KQ had 140K miles before replacing the frt outer
joints, I have seen "rebuilt" axles fail in 30K. Having seen and replaced
these on various cars I am of the opinion they are a low price/quality
alternative for someone who has to get by due to budget issues, I would not
put one on a car I intended to keep (unless the axle came from Lobro
directly). To keep your Audi fit, use only parts from the original vendors.
A new Lobro outer joint (443 498 099A) will cost about $200 unless you can
find someone with old stock.
