95 A6 gamma radio replacement

Recenting bought nice 95 A6 quattro.  The car is great, but the gamma
cassette radio is not.  I'd like to replace with in-dash CD Player
(eclipse?).  The local auto stereo shops says 'no problem, all we need
to do is remove radio and use an electronic adaptor'. 

Does anyone have experience replacing gamma radio w/ after market cd? 
I don't want to replace the wiring or speakers.  Any suggestions?
