Audi certainly seems to have had it's day in the Sun here in California.
The Monterey Historics was quite a show for all lovers of Audi, old and new.
I must confess it was a magical moment for me to see the parade of great
racing cars from Audi. During the exhibition laps Audi brought out the two
Silver Arrows, the R8R, The V8 DTM, the GT cars and the Pike's Peak S1 for
some laps. That was incredibly cool. Having never seen these race cars
before it was very memorable.
Cooler yet was nearly running square into Stephen Johnasson and my son
getting a thumbs up from Chris Aconimacki (sp). Chris has been calling races
here in the states for 30 + years. Chris seemed unfazed by my wife's
suggestion that they take a photo opp too. Unfortunately for the old guy,
his cameraman cleared things up by pointing out he may be back on the air at
any moment.
Eurospec had no such problems. I was snapping a picture of my wife with one
of their display cars when one of the guys asked if he may take some
pictures of my wife with their cars. Not being the shy type she jumped right
in. Next time the price will be a little higher - at least two tee shirts
next time.
We also tried to get a picture of the wife and kids with one of Audi's
racecars and an Audi AG mechanic. He didn't understand English though and
seemed to think I wanted him out of the way when in fact I was trying to get
the guy in the picture. Hmmm. He's probably thinking 'stupid Americans, I'm
trying to work here'.
As for the Audi corral, man! There were q-listers from all over the place.
The ur-quattros were coming out of the woodwork and there was no shortage of
V8s, 5ks too. We brought our '91 200q 20vt which seemed a good choice. There
were only five of those - three glacier blue in one place. My 90q20v would
have been a good choice too. Of the few there, mine seems to have the lowest
miles (with my commute that won't last) and most options. My '85 urq would
have been over-shadowed by some beautiful examples. Mine has had a long life
as a daily driver in Colorado and turning back the clock on her has been a
long, slow process.
Visiting the Audi show tent, my wife has decided the A6 4.2 is her next
car. After sitting in it a few moments she simply proclaimed that "this will
do nicely". I explained to her that the new S4 would have to be in the
driveway first. My 12 year old daughter however thinks the TT coupe should
be given to her "just because".
One final note. It was great fun putting some faces to some of you folks.
There are a number of bay area listers I'd have liked to stumble into but it
will have to wait for another time. Regretfully I won't be there today,
Sunday, for the club parade but I'm sure there will be lots of good stories
to come.
