Re: V6 Owners
> How reliable are these V6 motors?
I'd have to cast a vote as being VERY reliable. I now have 163k miles on my
car,and it still runs like it did 120k miles ago (i.e. when I bought it with 49k
miles on it). It's been on the highway, in traffic jams, on back country roads,
and the racetrack. It hasn't been "babied", but it hasn't been abused either.
I've yet to have any major mechanical engine problem. (I hope I didn't just
jinxmyself!!). It runs incredibly smooth, and you can barely tell it's running
while idling at a stoplight. IMHO, it is rather impressive.... that this car
doesn't show any real signs of wear yet.
Of course, if you asked anyone that knows me... they'd say that I take very
goodcare of my cars. But... the superb engineering and quality of these cars
makes it a whole lot easier to maintain that reputation.
I use only Amsoil 100% synthetic 10w30 oil, along with their oil filters. IMHO,
it is partly why I've had so much success over the years with my vehicles. I
change the oil filter (with a 1 quart top-off) evey 4k miles or so, with oil
changes every 12k miles. (Sometimes sooner... give or take). I've had their oil
tested in my car before, and the test came back very positive (i.e. using those
drain intervals etc...). I've NEVER had a problem with this type of oil and
filter maintenance program. Of course, this is just my opinion... and my
experience... which is what you asked for... so naturally, YMMV etc.
(Note to Audifans list et al: This response is not meant to invoke a spirited
debate over oil filters, oil companies, synthetic vs. dino, oil drain intervals
etc. PLEASE DON'T START A THREAD FROM THIS RESPONSE. We have all heard it
already. In other words, TO EACH HIS OWN. You do what you want... and I'll do
what I want. I do not work for Amsoil... I don't own a franchise etc. I have
nothing to gain. Just a satisfied user. Blah, blah, blah... ) :-)
If you are wondering whether or not to buy a V6.. I'd say "go for it". IMHO, I
think we'll see just as much success (reliability and longevity) with the Audi
V6 as we have with the I-5.
