Only on the newer cars, my father's '91 100 coming to mind ... unfortunately, 
on my mother's '87 5k, my '89 200q and my '85 Ur-Q, there's no way to open 
the tube except with a pair of shears.  That said, the replacment Bosch wires 
I've always used come pre-mounted inside a new one so I simply replace the 
whole thing.
