To me this kinda sounds like broken wiring in the door hinge area. You
can pull back the rubber boot, and see the condition of the wires. If
new wire hasn't been done in this area, odds are you need it. The best
idea is to splice in new wire from inside the drivers door to inside
the kick panel. Be careful in there, some of those wires are hot with
the car off. This problem can also cause strange symptoms in the
power windows. The wiring needs to be protected from these possible
short cicuits so that you don't burn out something really expensive.

Pull out the rear seat and check to see if the battery is hooked up to
a clear plastic vent hose which exits through the floor behind the
battery. If the battery isn't vented, the acid fumes could be damaging
the pump for the locks. There is a test in the Bentley manual for testing
the strength of the pump. Since you don't have the book, I'll list a
brief test.
There is a rubber hose connecting the vacuum pump (next to battery) to
the various lines which lead to the locks. Right next to the pump,
clamp this line shut (carefully, so you don't cut it). Then activate
the front door lock key to activate the pump. If it runs more than 30
seconds it should be replaced. Check around for a used part, the new
ones are megabucks. This test can also help you find a broken or
leaking line.
I had this problem on a 200Q and a used pump fixed it up.

BTW we already have one Michael Williams on the list, I guess you guys
are going to have to get creative to be recognised.
