You don't need to start the car.  On the 20Vs I've done it on, you need
to complete the whole diagnostic procedure - short the pins, switch on
the ignition, move the throttle quadrant once for each injector, and
then short the pins again a few times while it cycles through the
various engine bay valves.  Once the diagnostics are done, it erases
its memory.

You can also disconnect the battery, but beware of radios with codes.
