Perhaps this might answer your question ... the vanity plate that used to
adorn my 1978 Audi Fox GTI is now on my 1985 4kSQ ... it reads "ACHTZIG" ...
the Fox was sold in the USA during most of the 1970's.  It was a FWD with
longitudinal engine, with the drive train very similar to that in the VW
Dasher.  1979 was the last year of the Fox, with the 4000 model replacing it
in 1980.

Yes, it is very normal.  While it looks similar to the taillights on the 4k,
they are not identical.  It is possible to take the lights from an Avant and
transplant them to either a 5000 or 4000 sedan, but only Avant center
taillight section will fit an Avant w/o modification.  I had wanted to take
the all red lights from a V8 to install on my Avant ... but I found that
there is a funky extension at the ends of the trunk lid on the sedans which
interfere on the Avant.  It appears that the extensions could probably be
cut off and sealed ...
