A4 speed sensor?

Where does the A4 get input for the speedometer?  My dad just bought a new
A4 avant(yes, we are now an ALL audi family) and wants to know.  Is it a
cable like my 4k or is it an electronic pickup like the 5k series cars?
The German cars are starting to pile up around here.  So right now, our
family collection consists of:

my 87 5ktq parts car, 
my 87 4kq project car,  
my fathers 99 A4 Avant quattro
and my mothers A6q

I guess once you have one, they just start piling up!!
