V8Q Engine Computer Codes

I'm looking for explicit instruction on how to read the engine control module
fault codes for the V8Q?

The Audi microfiche service manual says they can be read from the computer by
counting the blinks of the "ECS Malfunction Light" but it doesn't say how to
trigger this. The Audi Owners Manual says "To activate the fault display of the
diagnostic system your vehicle may be provided with an adapter strap in the
glove compartment." I don't have such a strap, and there is no further
explanation about how it would be used.

I know for GM cars, the procedure is to short out two wires connected to the
ECM, turn on the ignition key  and then count the blinks. For Chrysler products,
the procedure is to turn the ignition key On-Off-On-Off-On, and then count the
blinks.

Can anyone help me with the Audi procedure?
