If the clutch is engaging in the forward gears, and you feel that something 
is holding you back, check the emergency brake cable to see if it is bound up 
somewhere in its path to the rear calipers.  Had this happen on another 
manual car in the past, and have tried to drive off in my 87, leading to the 
same problem you are describing.  To test this theory, try pushing the car 
forward in neutral.
