RE: Vehicle importing - Question for Canadian listeners

Rob:

There is a booklet that covers importation of vehicles into Canada. I have
one here but it is almost 10 years old. If I was in your shoes I would
contact the Embassy in Bonn or any of the Canadian Consulates in Germany
that way you know the information is accurate. They also have the
necessary customs forms that will be required to accompany your shipment.

BTDT advice. List your vehicle and in brackets list a Canadian model
equivalent. If they can see on paper that there was a similar vehicle sold
in Canada it makes it easier (less questions/answers) to get in. In your
case I'd consider listing it as a 4wd Audi Coupe - Canadian equivalent 2wd
Audi Coupe. They use the blue book like everyone else so the market value
and subsequent duties/taxes will be based on a CGT.

If you attempt to import it as a classic you may be required to supply an
appraisal, therefore you could be paying considerable more for
duties/taxes.

You may also be instructed to add/change your catalytic converter. I had
to do this with the last car I imported in '96 but it was only a 6 year old
vehicle and you can get that done here.

Subject:	Vehicle importing - Question for Canadian listeners

Hi Q-List:

I've mentioned that I want to move back to Canada after 5 years in the
Fatherland.

OK, I've been told that if the vehicle (car) is at least 15 years old,
that it can be imported into Canada without modifications. Hmmm...If
this is true, then I'll bring my 1985 Audi Coupe Quattro (not an Ur-Q)
over.

So, can someone in Canada please call their local MOT office and confirm
this and email me off list? Customs and duty charges would be nice...

TIA
