CGT exhaust ideas...
Today, I gave the Coupe a much needed wash, wax, and oil
change. Poking around the car, I examined the exhaust more
carefully than before. Nice aluminized setup, I think from
Midas (their logo on the mufflers). Two long oval canisters.
Very similar in layout to the exhaust on my old 5kt. Also
like my 5kt, there's a flanged joint after the first
muffler. Hmmm... what do you suppose I did? Just like on the
5kt, I removed the second one and headed out for a rumbling
test run. Noticed the muffler was full of something which
rattles when shaken (Cat guts?)
Well, much like on the 5kt, I had a nice deep tone, with a
weird resonance from 2300-3000 rpm. The rest of the time it
just sounds like Sam Butera (saxophone) or Louis Prima
(trumpet) depending on the revs.
Now, I'm not so dumb as to think you're supposed to go
around with half your exhaust missing- it's back on now- but
were I to eliminate one of the two, which would have the
less boomy effect? I have done this, keeping each muffler
while discarding the other, on the 5kt, but the turbo
muffled a good bit of this ring-ding resonance, so I don't
know if the same rules of thumb apply.
Anyway, with the exception of the resonance, I liked the
sound much better with only one muffler- much more
full-bodied and bellowing...
Any thoughts?

Rob
