For a little laugh at someone's expense:
Yesterday a co-worker of mine asked me to take a look at his recently
acquired old Mercedes 300D which suddenly refused to turn over. The no
start problem turned out to be sticking solenoid, but poking under the hood
I noticed a shiny, metal _manual_ valve installed as a heater valve. Yes,
the type you can get from plumber's supply store :-) Want to have heat?
Pull over, open the hood and turn the valve :-)
