In the February, 1999 issue of VW/Audi Car, there's an article about a
modified 80q (that's 4kq to us 'mericans) with a 2.6L non-turbo motor that
puts out 154hp @ 5500rpm ... at the wheels! In the April, 1998 issue,
there's also an article about another 2.6L powered 80q that quotes some 3rd
and 4th gear acceleration times that are quicker than those of a WR-code
Ur-Q, this despite the fact that it makes less horsepower and has a much
slower 0-60 time. (Obviously, this yet more evidence of turbo lag at
work...)

I want it!!!

Well, if it's a fat torque curve you want, then a longer stroke and
additional displacement is a good place to start ... of course, turbos tend
to make nice, fat torque curves, too. Horses for course, I guess, but
personally, I'd be more than happy to dump the turbos on my cars if there was
a way I could easily / cheaply / reliably generate the same amount of power
without one. You know, now that I think about it, maybe I *should* have
bought the LT-1 engine that was for sale locally a few weeks ago ... $2,200
with the wiring harness, ECU and all accessories wasn't a bad price, either.
