Brakes - maintenance questions
I'm doing some work on my brakes now and have a couple of general questions
about fault diagnosis, and rebuilding calipers.
First, I've never rebuilt a caliper, but would prefer to do it myself as
opposed to buying rebuilt.
My question...When is caliper rebuilding needed, and how do you know?
Is it a preventative maintenance thing?
I'm replacing the pads and rotors on the 89 100 now, and lubing caliper
guide pins while I'm at it.
It's calipers are original, never rebuilt
Recently I had noticed that under >hard< braking, the left front wheel
would lock up.
What would cause this?
The pads are thin but not worn out, and rotors appear smooth...although
they are down to 18 mm, w/ minimum spec of 20 mm.
Would the locking wheel be a symptom of needing either ...
- guide pin lube, or
- rebuilt caliper?
If the left wheel is locking up, which wheel is having the problem?
At first it would seem the problem is on the left.
But maybe not.
Maybe the left brake is working very well, and it's locking up because the
right one isn't?
Another question re: inspecting calipers prior to rebuild...
What should one look for to determine whether a caliper is suitable for
rebuild?
