Help. I feel inept.

While trying to replace the brake fluid in a '88 90q,
I can't get the screen out of the fluid reservoir,
which prevents me from emptying the reservoir of the
old fluid.  What is the trick?  I've tried everything
short of ripping the screen out in pieces.  It
shouldn't be this hard!
