Colin,

My guess is a cracked exhaust manifold and/or missing/broken EM studs.

Do you see smoke ever?  Just at start up could be overspun turbo.
A puff as you let off the throttle is usually bad valve seals.  Oil
on the driveway is usually crank seals IME.
