RE: VC v AWD - archive material?

Dave writes for the archives:

The summary below is not clear, here's why:

>1) it is impossible for a vc to transmit torque without slip.
OK

>2) in a centre application, it matters not whether you put a centre
>differential in front of a vc or not, you still won't get torque transfer
>wihtout slip.

Not clear for archive material, IMO. Torque transfer, or torque at both
driveshafts? In a center VC differential lock, you get torque at both
driveshafts *WITHOUT SLIP*. What's "in front of" mean?

>3) in the arrangement above, the haldex acts as a smarter vc.

Clarification. The Haldex *CAN* act as a smarter VC. You can claim it's
FASTER.

>4) if however, you connect a vc to *both* sides of a centre differential,

>both output shafts. this is a true (albeit complicated) full-time awd
>arrangement with a centre vc.

Not really clear for *archive* material, incorrect as stated. When a fixed
50/50 center VC differential lock is operating without VC activation, it's
*not* slipping (see 1 above, if 1 is true, how can your statement in 4 be
true as well?). It's slipping when one driveshaft spins faster than the
other relative to the f/r ratio. Not really convinced you still have a
firm concept on 4), but glad you admit it exists for the "archives". Once
you get some drawings on it's operation, the above will become more clear
(specifically 1 and 4 can't both be true as you present them for the
archives). BTW, Toyota used this system in the pre-"hang on clutch" WRC
cars. "Expensive?" Well, considering the mitsu talon/eclipse cars used
this system since 1989, as well as the 3kgt/stlthtt, that would be *very*
relative, don't you think? And, for that Mitsu awd window sticker at which
you scoffed, is *now* understood by you to be correct "awd" as printed? :) ?

So how do we go about deleting some of the posts before you "admitted" to 4),
Dave?

I'll let you up on 4, but you buy the beer for the complete miss.
