I had guessed as much about the "shooting" part, but is there any
reasonable explanation for "brake?"

        a brake is a hunters branch covered hideout. i would guess that it
applies to a vehicle that could be driven into the woods from where the
intrepid adventurers could shoot ducks deer or elephants with or without the
adornment of branches.
