cited, but the Audi that we came to know and love for 16 years has been
totaled, at least in the eyes of the insurance company.

An unbelievably familiar story. Sorry about the car but glad everyone's OK.
A similar incident happened with my 86 4KS. The insurance company did not
ask for anything in the way of salvage buyback. Kinda just said keep it.
Fixed it cheap as a spare but could have used it for parts just the same.
Happens to drive great in spite of the severe Tbone impact of a big,
powerful Lexus piloted by a not so good driver.
