I have seen Abt intercoolers fitted in 2 different  US ur-quattros a 1983
and 
a 1985. Is it better than stock? I don't know. For mounting position, in
both 
cars I have seen, the intercooler replaced the auxillary radiator and were
fitted
behind the front grill. The aux radiator was eliminated. The air exited the
turbo
and went across the front of the car in hard pipe mounted down low, it then 
went up and into the intercooler on the left side and exited the i/c on the
right 
side and then into the throttle body. I am not sure if the hood latch was
still in 
place.
