86 5K stereo replacement

When I bought my car, it didn't have a stereo in it.  I just picked up
an OEM unit from an auto wrecker and can't seem to get it working.  The
wiring harness is still there and when I plug it in it beeps and all the
characters light up on the lcd.  I enter the code and nothing happens.
Is there a special sequence? Does anybody know?
