Bad Alternator Indicator?

Greetings,

I'm fairly certain that the alternator just went out on my '86 4KQ. 
What I'm unclear of is a buzzing sound that accompanied the problem 
when I turned on the ignition switch.  I don't recall this buzz 
(which sounded like a door chime from my dad's '73 Chrysler) in the 
entire 7 years that I've owned the car.  Perhaps there's an bad 
alternator indicator chime.

If anyone's knows a good place to look for a new or rebuilt alt., as 
well as if it's something that I can handle doing myself, please let 
me know.
