'88 5kcstq fuel pump replacement, what else?

I was about to send the message below, but then I decided I ought 
to check out the pump first.  Is there any special tools or 
techniques involved in pulling the pump out, so that I can inspect 
and/or remove the screen?

Also, would the pump make that terrible noise if the screen was 
blocked?  Is that why it doesn't _always_ make the noise?

Is there anything else, besides the fuel filter, that I should replace 
when putting in a new fuel pump?  The pump comes with a new 
check valve.
